Adoption of a thought!

By Anthony Finlay

What was your New Years resolution, for allot of people it was a simple and meaningful prayer ‘Peace on earth and good will to all men’

So 2009, what are we looking at more of the same by the looks of things, slowly spiralling further into global suffering, anarchy and war. There has to be some sort of firmness of purpose on conflict resolution, it certainly will not be the United Nations stopping it, as they have enough resolutions and mandates that have still to be implemented. In addition they are busy strongly condemning the actions of rebel and government leaders. But the latest is the Security Council having ‘strong convergences’ but have ‘not agreed on a statement’ on the Gaza crisis, oh! and finally the UN Lauds the Ghanaian elections, is that it? is the UN breaking it's promise again.

I mean how are the UN going to control this when for example Africa has been marred by more than 20 major civil wars since 1960. Rwanda, Somalia, Angola, Congo, Sudan, Liberia, and Burundi are among those countries that have recently suffered serious armed conflict. Sure, there are people out there working in these theatres to do their very best with limited resources, but now with the lack of funding I wonder for how much longer. So what can the media do, the story ‘Sells’ ratings go up, a good example when the first lady Bush visited an unknown underfunded border camp in Northwest Thailand the heavens open, the donors were knocking at the door when she left, on the extreme Billy bob the auto worker keeps his hand in his pocket he’s in a recession, so that doesn't help, and can you blame him, wow! So media, when you see a snippet on page 3 in an international newspaper that has the UNHCR appealing for Congolese Troops to Protect Civilians, along with the invited Angolan and Zimbabwean troops that are also involved in atrocities why so much silence there? Don’t forget Darfur, Myanmar, Kashmir, Nepal, Zimbabwe, Mugabe and cholera the list goes on but don’t worry though, we have live coverage on Israel attacking Gaza and innocent civilians, but as for the other countries in conflict now, sorry you better go to page 3. Whilst in angola we returned to Luanda after a mission in the north the village there had just been hit by Unita rebels, the lady we passed by the village was carrying her baby, she was asking where the hospital was, our driver ignored her, and we asked why he ignored her, he said "stupid woman, shes carrying a dead baby". That village was wiped off the map and there was no official report of the incident. Media is very cruel and doesn't want dry blood it goes for the jugular and from what I have seen the worlds current affairs are on CNN or BBC but as you are aware so political.

So is it that humankind has on its agenda self-destruction, it will take time but as far as present world conflicts are concerned, it does not look pretty does it? Moreover, who is to know what conflict reignites next, ask our intelligence gatherers or maybe it is in the interest of the superpowers to let them go for it? So for the time being it seems we are back to the world leaders having dialogue either Interpersonal or Inter group remember Conflict is the perceived incompatibility of Goals, Actions, and/or Outcomes so once again condemning those countries leaders responsible for there actions comes next etc and so on! There is always a great deal more dialogue going on behind the scenes than reported, remember those red phones or hot lines you see in James Bond well they do exist, but then again are they discussing the conflict resolution and the crimes against humanity or the loss of revenue in natural resources, remember it may upset the global economy or there related markets.

Finally there is the deal an example, was Radovan Karadzic part of a bigger picture, maybe the joker in the deck of political cards being played at the time, European union membership perhaps. So what! the despots are now detained and are extradited to one of the three International Criminal Courts, the Hague, Arusha in Tanzania, and Phnom Penh Cambodia only then the injustice in some way begins, sure for those living witnesses the masterminds of these atrocities are behind bars but the tribunals often take years to reach a unequivocal verdict of guilty, and in many cases these very witnesses must give testimony to the events, that alone must be harrowing. In Rubilizi, Rwanda, community courts try and sentence those villagers blamed for any partaking in the genocide, swift justice, the court can hand down sentences of up to 30 years and for some that is life. Those indicted are sent to Arusha for litigation, again justice here comes slowly.

Should there ever be world peace, remember the unemployment line will be the biggest in history, from arms manufacturers, private armies to the United Nations so as the clocks continue to tick and the human race continues to move one day closer to whatever future harvest it has sown, then I have a feeling the same resolution will be made by many more people less fortunate next year.

Just a thought! finish your conflict I'll get back to you, "phone hangs up".
